2008年10月26日，应河南省地矿局副局长、地调院院长王建平，地调院副院长兼总工程师燕长海的邀请，南非福特海大学(University of Fort Hare)理学院院长、地学院主任赵宝金教授，地质学高级讲师C.J.Gunter先生等一行三人到我院进行学术交流与考察。
赵宝金教授结合我院在南部非洲开展的矿产勘查工作实际，以“Introduction to Southern Africa Geology and Mining with Special Reference to Gold, PGMs, Cu, Vredefort Dome, and Greenstone Belts”为题做了精彩的学术报告，重点介绍了南非矿产地质情况，主要包括四个方面内容：1) Introduction to South African geology and mines;2) Introduction to the Witwatersrand Basin, the world largest gold deposits;3) Introduction to the Bushveld complex, the world Largest PGMs deposits;4) Introduction the Cupper belt in the East Africa. 在院工作的地质、矿产技术人员30余人听取了报告，并就绿岩带型金矿、刚果（金）铜钴矿带找矿前景等问题进行了交流。
会后，在燕长海总工的带领下，赵宝金教授等参观了我院办公楼、陈列馆，对我院取得的各方面成就给予了高度赞扬。
